SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a cell-permeable aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is one of the most studied mitochondria-targeted antioxidant peptides.
SS-31 interacts directly with cardiolipin—a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane—stabilizing its architecture and restoring cristae morphology. Research has demonstrated its ability to reduce mitochondrial ROS production, maintain membrane potential (ΔΨm), and preserve ATP synthesis under ischemia-reperfusion conditions. Studies have explored its utility in cardiac, renal, and neurodegenerative disease models. For laboratory research use only.
